What’s Different
Unlike many of its sister casinos within the MGM group, such as the Excalibur immediately next door, the Luxor caters not only to rank-and-file blackjack players but also to high rollers. Its semi-private High Limit area is “devoted to players who like to play and play big,” with blackjack tables offering limits of $100~$5,000. The games are double-deck dealt by hand and six-deck dealt from a shoe. Local journalists have noted, “The pit bosses limit the interaction between the onlookers and the players. History of the Luxor in Las Vegas
The Luxor Hotel and Casino is one of the most striking hotel in Las Vegas with its pyramid shaped design. With an Egyptian theme it was one of the first fully-themed megaresorts in Las Vegas. Builders broke ground in 1991 and the hotel was completed in 1993. At the time the hotel was the tallest building on the strip and reportedly cost $375 million to build. In 1998 two additional hotel towers and a theater were added. The hotel is named for the city of Luxor in Egypt. The Luxor was purchased by MGM Mirage.
Featuring an Ancient Egyptian theme, the Luxor offers 4, 407 rooms which line the interior walls of the hollow pyramid. Rooms are reached by inclinators which travel along the interior of the pyramid at a 39-degree angle. Open hallways overlook an extensive atrium below.
Numerous attractions are offered on the atrium level including exciting rides, arcades, IMAX theatre and a re-reaction of King Tut’s Tomb. Entertainment includes the topless show Fantasy as well as numerous illusion and hypnosis attractions. Big name headliners frequently perform as well.
